Why basic strategy matters.

Blackjack is one of the few casino games where player decisions materially affect the mathematical edge. Basic strategy is about making those decisions correctly.

1

Reduce avoidable mistakes

Every incorrect hit, stand, double, split, or surrender decision gives away expected value. Correct basic strategy minimizes those avoidable errors for the rules being played.

2

The rules can change the answer

A move that is correct in one blackjack game can be wrong in another. Deck count, soft 17, double restrictions, surrender, dealer-blackjack procedure, DAS, and split rules can all affect strategy.

3

Use favorable opportunities properly

Basic strategy helps you capitalize on profitable doubles and splits and use surrender when giving up half a bet is mathematically better than continuing.
